Compare "Soldier's Home" to other texts that you have read by women. What patterns do you recognize in how Hemmingway writes about and characterizes women?

Hemingway generally characterizes women with lots of talking and emotional words. He also writes about them cooking or making the bed or doing housework a lot. For example, Krebs' mother was seen cooking and his sister got his newspaper for him. I think that Hemingway is trying to encourage the generalization for the role of a woman.

I agree with Joshua, but I also think that Hemmingway also wants to show that women has an important role in the shaping men's behavior, like how the mother influenced Kreb's life and how Kreb's sister influenced him in different ways. I think that Hemmingway is trying to generalize roles of women as Joshua said, but he is also trying to show the importance of that role of women

I agree with Joshua, but I also think that Hemingway portrayed women to be more than just housewives and other generally accepted roles for women. In Hemingway's short story "Hills Like White Elephants", the woman was portrayed to be quite different from Krebs' mother or sister. The unnamed woman has the ability to persuade her lover into doing what she wants, and also does not try to support her lover as compared to many other women in Hemingway's stories. Nevertheless, I still think that Hemingway may be trying to generalize the roles of women in his works.

It is really interesting to see women from the view of Krebs. In his eyes, he is not interested in any women except for his mother and sister. We can see how war can ruin a person's mind. Hemmingway is trying to show that women is only a "physical entertainment" to Krebs. He only enjoys the physical aspects of the girls like their appearances and clothing.

I agree with Jeyson, but I think Krebs is not even interested in his mother. His nonchalant attitude when his mother was talking to him during breakfast shows that he is not really interested in anything accept for his beloved sister.

I think Hemmingway is trying to emphasize that women are important in men's lives. They influence men a lot in many different aspects. For example, Krebs's mother pushes Krebs to find something that would help him live a meaningful and she is also worried that Krebs would waste his life. This means that she is trying to motivate Krebs to start a new life. In addition, Krebs’s sister becomes Krebs’s only hope after the war.
