The Wife's Tale takes place in Britain during King Arthur's reign. Men in King Arthur's days found the acts of chivalry the most important. Therefore the king sentenced the knight to death for committing rape. Women had little authority over men and were seen as prone to flattery.

I agree with Ken. The Knight has their own rules and pride. Raping women is not what a warrior or a man should do. So, the setting of the tale actually gives women some stand in the society.

I agree with Ken except for his last point. No where in the story the writer mentions how women are vulnerable to flattery.

The Wife of Bath's tale takes place during the time of King Arthur (relatively early compared to the temporal setting of the frame story). This was a fabled time where supernatural creatures such as fairies and incubi existed, and a time where chivalry was expected of men. This expectation was not met in the knight's situation, which is likely why his raping of the maiden was considered a big deal.
