What struck you as an important element of Tolkien's argument? What stood out to you? What did you agree or disagree with?

"The native learning cannot be denied in the case of Beowulf. Its display has grievously perturbed the critics, for the author draws upon tradition at will for his own purpose." If I am not wrong, I think this line is stating that the author is drawing up traditions at its own purpose, which might irritate other critics. I think that Beowulf was written in the way that conveys the Anglo Saxon style of writing. I enjoy this type of writing and I don't feel that the author is drawing up these traditions just for his own purpose.

Tolkien mainly argues that the epic poem "Beowulf" is based on new learning and old tradition. I agree with Tolkien because after all, "Beowulf" has a trait of eschatology. The battle between Grendel and Beowulf ends up with both of their's deaths, representing the old tradition of passing down eschatological stories. However, "Beowulf" also shows that it drew upon the old historical perspective because the old topics had a "special poetical attraction". Approaching the old, traditional concepts this way is a way of adapting the old to the new, thus proving a new learning in this epic poem.

other student’s response to the question.Although these are the minimum requirements for the homework grade,
students are encouraged to engage in further discussion with their classmates
using the forum. These additional responses are OPTIONAL. However, commenting will benefit your participation grade if you did not participate during our whole-class discussion on the day when you post your comment.
