Review the various answers that the knight rejected (lines 101-124). Why do you think he rejected these but accepted the old woman's answer? Did the knight have some reason for believing that the old woman's answer would please the queen and other ladies?

Perhaps he rejected all of the young women's answers, because he thinks they have too little experience to give him the correct answer. Whereas for the old woman, she had experienced those stages of life and knew what women really needed.

I agree with Shirley that the knight has rejected all other answers but accepting the one from the old woman because he believes that old woman is wise and more experienced. However, I think other than that reason, maybe the knight choose the old woman's answer because it is the closest to what he had expected. The knight might have some kind of answer in his heart for all this time, but he just cannot find someone to prove that his idea is right.

I cannot agree more! In fact, I think Chaucer's wording of what the old woman says plays an important role of reflecting why the knight accepted the old woman's answer. The main difference is the tone. The old woman's answers sounds wiser, deeper in meaning, and more experienced, whereas the previous answers showed lack of wisdom or experience.

I agree with you. I think another reason why the Knight trusts the old woman is because the old woman is really confident since she already asks for something in return if she gets the answer right. Usually, a person with such great confidence is correct.

I totally agree with you. Wisdom grows as ages grow. Even though the old woman may not be as advances as middle-aged ladies, simply because she has seen more and heard more, she deserves respect and trust.

Somehow, a quote from William Shakespeare occurs to me. It goes, "What's the matter, you dissentious rogues, that rubbing the poor itch of your opinion make yourself scabs? " I think this quote actually shows why the knight would not adopt the answers from various women who would not admit they themselves are a bit biased.

Discussion Board
Assignment: Students are expected to participate in the class’ online discussion forum hosted at shrubber.weebly.com. Questions related to assigned readings will be posted by the teacher each week. Students are expected to post a minimum of one original response per week. When more than one question is posted by the instructor in a given week, students may choose to which of the questions they respond. Students are also expected to comment on at least one other student’s response to the question. Although these are the minimum requirements for the homework grade, students are encouraged to engage in further discussion with their classmates using the forum. These additional responses are OPTIONAL. However, commenting will benefit your participation grade if you did not participate during our whole-class discussion on the day when you post your comment. You DO NOT have an opportunity to make up credit lost for lateness, lack or preparation or violation of classroom/school rules.
Student posts should NOT exceed 100 words. All responses will be graded on content, organization and grammar.
